Institute of Reading Development

The Institute of Reading Development hires seasonal at home workers to enroll (aka: sell) their summer reading programs. The work is pretty intense, you are on the phone almost constantly explaining the same things over and over again. I worked here for a season and it was a love/hate relationship. The pay is excellent (LOVE)... the actual work made me want to shoot myself (HATE). It wasn't all bad though, in fact I would definitely do it again. The season lasts for about 3-6 months (the better you are at selling the programs, the longer they keep you for. This comes in really handy: How to Sell Anything to Anybody). You are hired as an actual employee (no benefits, but you do earn free reading programs for family members), the pay is a base rate of $11 per hour or commission (except for maybe your first week, you ALWAYS make commission). The top reps earn $25-$35 an hour, and the bottom reps make around $17-$20 an hour. The more you do it, the better you get at it! They also have an excellent training program (training is about 2 weeks and during that time you make minimum wage for your state). They hire all over the country! You need an up to date & fairly new computer, a headset (check out: Panasonic KX-TCA400 Over The Head Headset), the ability to sell and discuss reading programs with parents (usually with screaming kids in the back, and many times with hard to understand accents). MyPoints

I have been using MyPoints for about 15 years. You earn points for reading emails and shopping online. If you install the toolbar, you automatically get points for any shopping that you do, without having to visit the MyPoints website first. It's great at Christmas time because if you shop online you earn a ton of points on your purchases.  As for their emails, well, I honestly don't even read most of the emails they send, I just open them, click through, and then delete. Easy Points! You can even open a separate email account just for reading mypoints. (With myMail - Free Email Manager for Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, Live, MSN and AOL Mail you can easily separate your individual accounts on your smartphone or tablet). You get about 5 points per email that you read. Sometimes you earn more if you sign up for a service. They also have random surveys on their website that you can earn points for completing. As with most of the websites in this category, you aren't going to get rich doing this, it is not a full time job. But it's an easy way to save and cash in your points for some great gift cards. FOAP

Foap is an app that allows you to take photos on your phone and sell them. You charge per photo, and can charge as much or as little as you like.  People are are always looking for photos for various projects... websites, greeting cards, etc. It's really kind of fun!

With Write Score you can work at home scoring student essays. This company offers only seasonal work and they only hire for a short time each year. The amount you are paid is rumored to be around $8-$15 an hour, but I think that depends on how quickly you can score. Write Score does require a 2 year degree, so not just anyone can apply. The do have training that you go through first to teach you how to score. There is nowhere to apply for jobs on the website, but they do use CareerBuilder when they are hiring, so keep an eye out! AccuTran Global is a Canadian transcription company providing services to clients around the world. They prefer experience but will hire newbies if a skills test is passed. Check them out here.

Tigerfish

If you are a quick typist with a good ear for language and a strong sense of written English, transcribing for Tigerfish can be a way to earn money while working at home (or on the road) with a flexible schedule. Tigerfish has been in business since 1989. They do hire entry level but you must take test. US only. Check them out here.
